A very rare and unusually attractive tetrobol from Methymna

LESBOS. Methymna. Late 4th to 3rd centuries BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 15 mm, 2.65 g, 10 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent on the bowl. Rev. AIOΛE - A Thunderbolt; below, kerykeion. BMC 1. SNG Copenhagen 331. HGC 6, -. Very rare. A beautifully toned and unusually attractive piece. A few faint scratches, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The serpent on the bowl of Athena's helmet was clearly copied from contemporary staters of Alexander III.
